Definition
Gutenberg is the block editor built into WordPress — the default way you write and lay out content without installing a page builder.
In plain English
Every piece of content in Gutenberg is a block: a paragraph, an image, a heading, a gallery, a button. You stack blocks, and each one carries its own settings.
It replaced the old single text box in 2018 and has quietly grown into a full site editor that can style headers, footers and templates too.
Why it matters
Gutenberg is free, ships with WordPress, and gets noticeably faster every release. For blogs, documentation and content-heavy sites it's often all you need — and it produces lighter markup than most builders.
Even if you design with Elementor, your posts and your clients' day-to-day editing will probably run through blocks.
